12 holes, 12 stories

Every hole is a game of golf and a piece of the history of Mielno and its surroundings: from the tram to the sea to a boat from a thousand years ago.

Each of the 12 holes presents a different theme from the history of Mielno and the area. You do not have to read the boards to play, but it is worth it: every hole has a short story, a curiosity and a tip on how to play it. We keep facts and legends apart.

The visualisations are illustrative: they are designs of the holes, not photographs of a finished course. The historical photographs come from free licences and the source is given.

By tram to the sea

Koszalin – Mielno – Unieście · 1905 · 1913–1938

From July 1913 an electric tram – the “beach railway” – ran from the station in Koszalin to Mielno, and from 13 July of that year all the way to Unieście. The route was about 14 km long and the journey took around 50 minutes. In Mielno the tracks ran along today’s Lechitów and Chrobrego streets, and in Unieście along 6 Marca Street. The beach tram ran until 30 September 1938, when a bus replaced it.

Did you know? On market days the tram also carried fish to Koszalin – a basket of fish needed its own ticket!

For children Over 100 years ago people went to the beach… by tram!

How to play Hit the ball along the track, go round the loop and guide it under the tram into the hole.

Dunes, walls and promenades

Mielno · Sarbinowo · Gąski · Łazy · 1628 · 1690 · c. 1910 · 2021–2023

Mielno, Unieście and Łazy lie on a spit – a narrow strip of sand between the sea and Lake Jamno. For centuries storms have shifted the dunes here: in 1628 drifting sand covered the fields in Gąski, and in 1690 the sea broke through the spit at Łazy. That is why the shore was reinforced. In Sarbinowo around 1910 a wall of stone and concrete was built, on which today’s promenade stands. In 2021–2023 Mielno received a new stone revetment, wooden groynes and over 170,000 m³ of sand for the beach.

Did you know? The concrete “stars” on the beach (in Polish gwiazdobloki) break the waves like giant building blocks.

For children The wind built the dune out of sand. Dune grass holds it with its roots like a net.

How to play Guide the ball in zigzags through the dunes and under the promenade footbridge – watch out for the piles!

Where the wind ground the flour

Sarbinowo · Mielno · c. 1920–1935 (photographs)

Before electric mills appeared, grain was ground by the power of the wind. Photographs from the 1920s show a windmill in Sarbinowo – it stood at today’s Młyńska Street. A pre-war list of localities also names a building in Mielno simply called “Mühle”, meaning “mill”. The windmill on this hole is an illustration – not a copy of a particular building.

Did you know? In a post mill the whole wooden building was turned, while in a “Dutch” mill only the cap with the sails turned.

Legend or fact? Residents say a windmill once stood where the transformer by the Lidl store is. So far we have found no proof. Do you have an old photo? Show it at the ticket office!

For children The wind turned the sails of the windmill – and inside, millstones ground the grain into flour.

How to play Wait until the sails uncover the tunnel in the base – or go round the windmill.

Seaplanes over Lake Jamno

Unieście, Lake Jamno · c. 1913–1945

Lake Jamno was a natural airfield: aircraft on floats took off and landed right on the water. Already during the First World War a small air station operated in Unieście. In 1936–1939 a base with hangars and two concrete slipways down to the lake was built here. Stationed here were, among others, Heinkel He 60 seaplanes, and towards the end of the war Dornier Do 24 flying boats rescuing people from the sea. The brick hangars still stand today.

Did you know? On 31 October 1944 the mechanic Heinz Roesch stole a Do 24 flying boat from Unieście and – with no pilot training – flew it to Sweden.

For children A seaplane has little boats – floats – instead of wheels.

How to play Guide the ball between the floats of the seaplane, then up the slipway to the hangar.

Sails on ice

Lake Jamno · before 1945 · 2006 · 2026

When Lake Jamno freezes, it turns into a racetrack for ice yachts – boats on runners, driven by a sail. Even before the war, members of the Koszalin rowing and sailing club glided here in winter on ice yachts from the harbour in Unieście. In January 2026 the Polish DN-class Ice Yacht Championships were held on Jamno – for the first time since 2006.

Did you know? An ice yacht can speed along several times faster than the wind blows!

For children An ice yacht is a sailing boat on skates.

How to play A slalom over the “ice”: avoid the buoys and guide the ball under the runner plank of the ice yacht, between the runners.

A basket for the beach

Baltic resorts, Mielno · 1882 · 1956

A wicker beach chair (Strandkorb) is a little house on the sand: it protects from wind, sun and sand. The basket-maker Wilhelm Bartelmann of Rostock (1882) is considered its inventor, although similar baskets had been made earlier. The baskets soon reached the Baltic resorts, and in Mielno they were also hired out in the People’s Republic – in 1956 entry to a guarded beach cost 2 zloty.

Did you know? Bartelmann is said to have made the first basket for an elderly lady with rheumatism who could not sit in the wind.

For children A beach basket is an armchair with a roof – your own little house on the beach.

How to play The baskets stand as on a real beach – the shortest way leads through the tunnel in a basket.

Holidays in the People’s Republic

Mielno, Unieście, Łazy · 1946–1989

After 1945 the state took over Mielno’s hotels and guesthouses, and from 1949 they were run by the Workers’ Holiday Fund (FWP). In the late 1960s the large FWP resorts – “Bandera”, “Dar Pomorza”, “Jantar” and “Perła” – had about 770 places, and alongside them came company holiday centres, campsites and wooden cabins. The former Böttcher hotel, as the holiday home “Wczasowa Dola”, was nicknamed “wczasowa niedola” (holiday misery) by its guests in 1959 – because of the groats with potatoes and salty coffee.

Did you know? In 1968 a summer cinema called “Muszelka” opened in Unieście.

For children Ask your grandma and grandpa what their holidays were like – they surely have interesting stories!

How to play Hit the ball through the door of the cabin – inside there is a bend, and the exit leads to the final straight.

Rescuers from the red shed

Gąski · Łazy · 19th century – 1945

On the shore at Gąski and Łazy, German lifesaving stations once operated. In a brick shed (German: Rettungsschuppen) a rowing lifeboat waited on a cart, and next to it a rocket apparatus used to fire a line to a ship in distress. When the alarm was raised, a crew of volunteers pushed the boat straight into the waves.

Did you know? On the former Prussian coast, now Polish, there were 30 such stations – two of them in our area.

For children The rescuers set out to help even in a great storm – rowing!

How to play Drive through the open doors of the shed and go down the “slipway” straight into the sea – into the hole.

The mysterious barrel

the sea, on the border of Mielno and Unieście · c. 1935 – Dec 2023

For almost 90 years a “barrel” stood in the sea on the border of Mielno and Unieście – a concrete cylinder that the boldest swimmers swam out to. It was built around 1935 as a tide gauge: a float inside measured the sea level, and a light on top showed the way to seaplanes. After the war a state meteorological institute carried out measurements – until the 1980s. In December 2023 a storm toppled the barrel and it disappeared under the water.

Did you know? People joked that it was the “plug for draining the Baltic”.

For children The barrel measured whether the sea was rising or falling – like a giant ruler in the water.

How to play The barrel is in your way: risk the narrow gap by the shore or go round it via the island.

A gate against the storm

Jamno Canal (Jamieński Nurt) · 2013

Lake Jamno is joined to the sea by a narrow canal. During a storm the wind can push sea water into the lake and raise its level – then the areas of Mielno, Unieście and Łazy are at risk. That is why storm gates were built on the canal in 2013: six bays with separate closures that cut the lake off from the storm surge.

Did you know? The gates are about 4 m high, but less than 2 m of them stands above the water.

Background Jamno is a former sea bay that sand cut off from the Baltic.

For children It is like a door we close so the sea does not get into the lake.

How to play The middle gate is closed “for the storm” – aim for the open bays!

Ladies to the left, gentlemen to the right

Baltic resorts, Mielno and Unieście · 19th century – c. 1900

A hundred-odd years ago, in the Baltic resorts ladies and gentlemen did not bathe together. There were separate bathing places – for women and for men – often several hundred metres apart, and you entered the water from wooden cabins. Shared “family beaches” only became common around 1900. The first bathing guests from Berlin came to Mielno and Unieście as early as the 1830s.

Did you know? In 1908 a bathhouse with warm baths opened in Mielno – for those who found the Baltic too cold.

For children Back then mum and dad would have had to bathe on two different beaches!

How to play Choose your way: the bathing place for ladies or for gentlemen – each arm has its own hole.

A boat from a thousand years ago

Łazy · discovered Aug 2022 · tentatively 10th–11th century

In August 2022, after a storm, a father and son from Łazy noticed wooden planks in the shallow water, among the remains of an ancient forest. They turned out to be parts of a boat that experts of the National Maritime Museum tentatively dated as far back as the 10th–11th century. The Slavs built such boats from planks joined with overlap using wooden pegs. In the Middle Ages a canal linking Jamno with the sea flowed through Łazy – it was blocked only by the storm of 1690.

Did you know? The Vikings joined planks with iron rivets, and the Slavs with wooden pegs. That is how they knew whose boat it was.

Note The dating is preliminary – we are still waiting for the results of the wood analysis (dendrochronology).

For children This discovery was made by a dad and his son – maybe one day you will discover something too!

How to play The last hole! Go through the gaps in the hull of the boat or go round it between the trunks of the old forest.
